The Path: Departure Notes/Higher Sounds: Caia- Remembrance (August 31, 2010)

I’m typing this post 6 hours before my one-way flight to New York City.  Many people I’ve come across this past week would ask me, “So are you ready?”

My standard answer was: “As ready as I can be.”

It’s been 8 months since my very first post on fear…and that it does not go away when you make big risks or decisions.  Sure I’m overwhelmed, sure I’m holding my breath figuring out how I’m going to raise necessary funds by September 9th, sure this move truly hasn’t hit me yet.

Ta-daaaaa!  Transition is meant to be necessary, not comfortable.

Atlanta served as training grounds for the career I’m about to embark on…I’ve been listening to my inner voice for months and it says it’s time for the next chapter, a higher stage, a strong push to become the best at what I do.

But I am grateful that I can call Atlanta my homebase: the support here from friends, acquaintances, and complete strangers who in 5 minutes of talking to me declare “You’re going to do great things/You’re going to be famous” is truly overwhelming…and confirming of God’s plan and gift He’s given me.

Now’s the time to impact New York City.  Let the next exciting stage of this journey begin.

Now for one of the most beautiful songs I’ve ever heard to complement this once-in-a-lifetime experience:

What better way to celebrate my move to New York City and Fashion Week pursuits than shooting Atlanta’s most exclusive fashion show event the night before (featuring Proenza Schouler)?

Attending this event was truly a full circle moment: a year ago I would’ve been timid and insecure because of my age and “visibility” in the high-end circle.  Now, I’m on first-name basis with many of them.  Time flies when you’re making a name for yourself in a given industry.

This body of work was taken during my 4-day visit to New York City a week ago- before my permanent move scheduled by the end of this month.  I made two very brief visits to one of the world’s most recognizable public spaces to document the “razzle and dazzle” that millions all over the world admire.  Overwhelming, exciting, and bright, Times Square has a surprisingly strong presence of classic aestheticism, something I did not expect to find when I arrived.

The work below celebrates the timeless aspects of this ever-evolving area, and highlights the confluence of tourists, thrill-seekers, and natives who in themselves contribute to the tradition of this one-of-a-kind destination.

Adventures! Mister Levius Visits New York City

I was tempted to write a lengthy, intellectual description of the “new” New York City I experienced last week before my future “big” move- but I simply don’t have the time.  There are too many perspectives of this one City to describe in one post, so I will do my best to keep it short (for your convenience.)

To be honest, I had to warm up to the City on the first day.  Not because something about it was wrong – I was out-of-my-mind exhausted since I had but one-hour of sleep…on a plane.  My excitement preceded my biological demand for sufficient rest.

I first arrived in the bustling section of Harlem off of the MTA North train to meet my college friend who resides there.  It seemed like regular Harlem for a stretch of my trek, and then you’d turn a corner and see people you wouldn’t expect to see walking around, or look across the street and see a luxury condo midrise under construction.  People weren’t lying- times in Harlem ARE a-changin’.

My head was spinning (not because I saw H&M stores downtown as frequent as Starbucks) as my college friend and I walked around the Flatiron District and Midtown. I was a little bummed to voluntarily forfeit my attendance to British songstress Corrine Bailey Rae’s concert performance; I knew I would pass out if I didn’t recharge and relax for an extended period.  I didn’t even bother taking my camera out 90% of the time- Mister Levius was beat.

The second day went much smoother (I wasn’t half-dead!).  After a very nice family reunion in Long Island, I prepared to meet Vogue’s famous editor Andre Leon Talley’s personal photographer at the Brooklyn Museum’s monthly Block Continue reading

New York City this past week was…

I’d really need to devote a large amount of  time to sufficiently tell you (and show you) about my 5-day experience and what I foresee happening when I move here permanently.

What I can say is this: after some initial trepidation, I am convinced that my riskiest move thus far will be the best decision I’ll ever make.

Higher Sounds: Goapele- Closer/On the Path: The Brink

How Fitting.

I am writing this post with less than 3 hours before I ride the earliest morning bus and train to the Atlanta airport.  If my stand-by flight goes as planned, I’d be in City that Never Sleeps by 9:45am.  As you may have guessed, I am excited and 100% restless.  However, I’m also feeling this weird sensation of not exactly knowing what I’m getting into, feeling “outside of time” with the upcoming events.  I’ve been asking myself from time to time, “What am I doing?”  “Is this REALLY happening?”  I guess when your passion brings you to the brink of something magnificent, it becomes an out-of-body experience.

And all I’m doing is previewing New York City.

From today (Friday) through Tuesday I will be in New York City before “The Big Move” in about 2 weeks.  My family reunion in Long Island is Saturday (haven’t been to it in 5 years- boy don’t I have some stories to tell…) and my New York Fashion Week client POSHGLAM is heading a brunch with powerhouse fashion invitees (I’ll be covering this…with my business cards on deck).  The remainder of the time will be sizing up this special city- where my dreams will take Continue reading
