Excursions: Kelly Wearstler Resort 2013 Collection

All images by Travis Levius.  All rights reserved.

Last week, I had the pleasure to attend Kelly Wearstler’s Exclusive Blogger Cocktail Event in Chelsea, celebrating the L.A.-based designer’s new Resort 2013 Collection.  Before being debriefed on the collection’s inspiration, my initial thoughts were “chaos, busy, bold”…later realizing that this was the designer’s intended reaction.

Designer Kelly Wearstler pictured above (center).

Kelly’s work is a colorful, frolicking exploration of essence vs. abstract: reserved for the fearless, forbidden for the faint of heart.  Though the rack of graphic, vibrant separates whetted my appetite, the live model demonstration truly tapped me into Kelly’s genius vision.

Inspired by the clothes and the amazing balcony view of Midtown, I took the models outdoors for an impromptu shoot.  Putting the clothes in context with the urban jungle was exhilarating, and it is clear that multi-talented  Kelly Wearstler (who is also a jewelry and modern furniture designer) is truly one to watch.

Special thanks to the lovely models and to HL Group for the event invite.

Excursions: Fire on 14th Street

Images by Travis Levius.  All Rights Reserved.

I had just finished photographing a Fashion Week presentation, and as I walked toward the subway to go home (I was exhausted), I noticed smoke and fire brimming from an apartment building.  All of the fatigue, moodiness, and exhaustion vanished completely when I advanced towards the scene; I was fully present in a way that astounded me.  I imagined myself as an noted news photographer commissioned to photograph the story (while not getting too close to the very real danger).  This recent experience reinvigorated my love for photojournalism and dedication to pursue it.

Excursions: Lunch Break on the Brooklyn Bridge {February 2011}

Images by Travis Levius.  All Rights Reserved.

It’s been SUCH a long time since I’ve posted an non-Fashion related Excursion piece on the site (like, last year) so I’m glad to kick it off photographing what has to be one of the most beautiful locations in the world: the Brooklyn Bridge.

One thing I’ve learned, and has paid off, is that no matter where you are or what different plans you had in mind, if you’re inspired by that very moment…CAPTURE IT.  I was already “photo’ed out” by finishing my {glorious} second NY Fashion Week season which ended the day before, and I just wanted to eat my chipotle chicken wrap and bask in the NY skyline’s glory on an unusually warm February day.

But I couldn’t help it.

My spirit couldn’t hold back the excitement it had over both the architectural elements of the bridge and the onlookers who, unasssumingly, added even more beauty and inspiration to the scene.

Excursions- The Prequel: Jeffrey Fashion Cares, Atlanta, GA

All images by Travis Levius.  All Rights Reserved.

What better way to celebrate my move to New York City and Fashion Week pursuits than shooting Atlanta’s most exclusive fashion show event the night before (featuring Proenza Schouler)?

-

Attending this event was truly a full circle moment: a year ago I would’ve been timid and insecure because of my age and “visibility” in the high-end circle.  Now, I’m on first-name basis with many of them.  Time flies when you’re making a name for yourself in a given industry.

Excursions: “Timeless Square, New York City”

Select Images Are Available for Sale.

E-mail info@MisterLevius.com for information.

Images by Travis Levius.  All Rights Reserved.

This body of work was taken during my 4-day visit to New York City a week ago- before my permanent move scheduled by the end of this month.  I made two very brief visits to one of the world’s most recognizable public spaces to document the “razzle and dazzle” that millions all over the world admire.  Overwhelming, exciting, and bright, Times Square has a surprisingly strong presence of classic aestheticism, something I did not expect to find when I arrived.

The work below celebrates the timeless aspects of this ever-evolving area, and highlights the confluence of tourists, thrill-seekers, and natives who in themselves contribute to the tradition of this one-of-a-kind destination.

Excursions: Counter-Rally to Westboro Baptist Church at Emory Univ. (April 17, 2010)

All photos taken by Travis Levius.  All Rights Reserved.

The suckers never showed up.

The notorious Westboro Baptist Church, known for years as the “All f-gs are going to Hell” congregation who have no problem condemning homosexuals at their funerals (they really have), was scheduled to make an appearance at Emory University.  The reason?  The running of the play “The Laramie Project”, depicting the events stemming from the heinous murder of gay college student Matthew Shepherd in 1998.

In their own hateful words, “God hates fag-infested & fag-enabling Atlanta, GA and all having to do with spreading sodomite lies via The Laramie Project – a tacky piece of cheap, lying, fag propaganda masquerading as legitimate theater.”  This “What Would Jesus Do?” thing surely doesn’t get through to some of these “Christians.”

College communities (even beyond Emory) and gay & lesbian organizations were roused by the news of their appearance, and about 150 people lined the sidewalk in front of Emory’s Burlington Road building.  While the crowd awaited the church’s arrival (for naught) the mood was kept light-hearted, people Continue reading

Excursions: The Blue Ridge Mountains

(All photos taken by Travis Levius)

I have to admit up front: when my event planner friend invited me to her Super Bowl party at Blue Ridge, GA, I really could’ve cared less about the football game.  I was excited to get my camera out in the wilderness and hopefully capture magic.  It ended up becoming arguably my best work yet for a one-day excursion.  Take a look at the pics below:
