Proverbs: Theodore Roosevelt

(Photo taken by Travis Levius)

Far better is it to dare mighty things, to win glorius triumphs, even though checkered by failure… than to rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy nor suffer much, because they live in a gray twilight that knows not victory nor defeat.

–Theodore Roosevelt

…this should be written in every textbook, every religious text, in our sermons, in our classrooms, posted on bulletins in the workplace, framed in our home, seen across computers, television screens, and phone devices.  Wishful thinking it may be, but I often wonder how dynamic this world could be if hundreds of millions more would start living in the triumphant path Roosevelt described above.  While I can’t talk to the millions (yet), I would like to encourage you, reader and friend, to reflect on your life and your life goals, and determine if you’re trying to live your best life or the safe life.  The safe life, 10 times out of 10, does no one any good; the best life, 10 times out of 10, impacts generations.

Which course will you choose?

Video: Michael Jordan, Product of Failure

No one, not ONE (including one of sports’ most iconic figures), is exempt from the inevitability of failure…of disappointment…of error- in pursuit of success.

Fear of failure: could this be the Achilles’ Heel to the majority of humanity?

Capturing Anna Wintour front row at New York Fashion Week.  There couldn’t have been more of a “real” moment than this.

Most likely- the photo that will jumpstart my career.

Achievers: Meet Steve Harvey, Comedian, TV/Radio Personality, Author {Exclusive Interview}

I had the opportunity to meet  and interview top national comedian (and recent best-selling author of “Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man”) Steve Harvey this year.  I wanted him to share his perspective on “making it” for my MisterLevius.com readers and he definitely delivered.  Instead of the traditional “Q & A” format of my other celeb interviews, here are some brief highlights of Harvey’s take on pursuing your dreams that, I believe, will help many (like myself) put things into perspective.

1.  STOP FIGURING OUT “HOW”

“You don’t have to know how it happens: that ain’t your job, nor your business.  If you could figure out the ‘how-to-do’ everything, everybody would be successful.  All you have to have is the belief that it’s going to happen…God gives you the how-to.”

2.  INCH-BY-INCH…

“When you set a goal, don’t look at it from a stand-point of ‘I don’t see how I’m going to make a million dollars.’  No you can’t see it, but can you figure out how to make $5?  Ok, then make the $5.  Then go make $5 more, then make $10, then make $15- inch-by-inch, anything’s a cinch.  What stops people in their dreams and their goals are that they see the big picture…and because they can’t figure out how to Continue reading

The Path: (One) Mission Accomplished! But Where Does it Start?

[Me in front of the Lincoln Center]

Perhaps I should refrain from saying “dreams” because that tends to scare many, or conjure up this mystical, hardly-will-ever-happen scenario. For this post, let’s just call them “goals.”

My “goal,” as ambitious as it is, was to photograph New York Fashion Week and feed my passion for the runway with only one year’s worth of photography under my belt.  With planning as my foundation and determination as my fuel, I have accomplished the goal I set for myself and experienced much more than I could’ve imagined:

-Spotting rising model star Henry Watkins at the corner of my eye on the “A” train the first day of Fashion Week, meeting him and then seeing him again walking the runway at the Tommy Hilfiger runway show.

-Seeing legendary fashion photographer Patrick Demarchelier attend front row at designer’s shows

-Standing right next to fashion icon Andre Leon Talley at Manolo Blahnik’s (and so nervous that I didn’t say anything!) then later on in the week redeeming myself and meeting him after the glorious Oscar de la Renta show.

-Meeting the iconic New York Times street fashion photographer Bill Cunningham who, at the age of 81, is still as youthful and passionate about capturing great moments through his lens.

-The networking!  The networking was stupendous- editors, stylists, illustrators, models, etc.

-Shooting amongst all of these “Hall of Famer” photographers and videographers in the media pit.  I may take good photos with a one-year career, but amongst these 5+ years experienced photographers I was surely just a rookie.

-Photographing the world’s TOP models such as Karlie Kloss, Coco Rocha, Chanel Iman (!!), Freja Beha, Continue reading
