The Path: Pursuing Your Dreams is NOT Mysterious!

I’ll admit that my experiences- right place at right time occurrences and clients that seemed impossible to get as a very new photographer- do seem out of the ordinary. Many may look at success stories as lofty, hard-to-grasp events that you have to be “lucky” to get. I want to take the time to debunk the myth that following your dreams has to be this whimsical, flighty experience but is instead a very practical process that anyone can achieve.  I’ll use experiences I had in just the last two weeks and break down how, step-by-step, it happened:

1)  I’m about to shoot Fashion Week-related celebrity images for a internationally-known photo agency based in Milan, Italy.
2)  I’m the official New York Fashion runway photographer for mega fashion site POSHGLAM.com
3)  Upon signing of a contract last week, the United States Department of Commerce is now one of my photography clients (shooting in August)

!!!!

I am definitely excited about these recent achievements…but I can’t say I’m too surprised.  Why?  Because I took deliberate steps to get to them!

1)    Milan Photo Agency

This month, I voraciously looked all over online for anything I could find about agencies or companies that send photographers to shoot NY/London/Paris/Milan Fashion Weeks.  I looked closely at runway photo credits in Vogue, Elle, NY Mag, etc. and wrote them down. Imaxtree, the agency I’m referring to, showed up on many popular publications, so I Googled their name, went to their website, headed to the contact page and got a contact e-mail.  I then took my biggest step: I faced my fears and EMAILED them, letting them know I’m a photographer interested in shooting for them and provided a link to my photography website.  A day later…I received a response from the Milan HQ. After e-mailing back and forth, they became interested in me photographing celebrities and street fashion during New York and London Fashion Week.  Yay!

2)    POSHGLAM.com

This achievement involves the power of networking and the invaluable strength of referrals. My friend and up-and-coming MC Malaki from Virginia Beach got me in touch with a stylist where I am in Atlanta.  I introduced myself to her through Facebook and we’d write back and Continue reading

ADVENTURES! My Photograph Featured on Oprah.com

Last night, wrapping up my regular night owl activity (researching something fashion, photography or inspiration-related while listening to great music), I had the urge to check Oprah.com and see if my photo was selected (out of thousands of entries) for her monthly Breathing Space Gallery.

A few months ago I started to regularly check Oprah.com, primarily to keep my eye on any topic that the producers will post that will pertain to my ongoing story.  I also took the time to look around other features on her site and came across her “Spirit” section, chock-full of inspirational words, stories, and artwork. It was then that I discovered her gallery, submitted by people all over the globe, where 20 great nature-themed photos are selected to be apart of the collection.

After putting it off for a while, I decided to go for it in April.  I didn’t make the cut.  In May, I pulled one of my favorite flower pictures that I took- out of all places- at an office park.  I told myself “They have to include this one” as I proceeded to submit it.  And a few weeks later…they did!

There’s no winning prize, no money, no free tickets to Oprah Winfrey’s show.  But Oprah.com is Oprah.com…bragging rights will be sufficient ;)

Achievers: Meet Rachel Roy, Fashion Designer/Humanitarian {Exclusive Interview}

“What would truly make me think ‘Wow, perhaps I’m starting to accomplish what God has intended for me to accomplish’ is when I truly give back to others and help others have freedom…that’s when I’ll start to think that maybe I’ve started to accomplish something truly great.” -Rachel Roy

My personal experience with lightning-speed success doesn’t hold a candle to the accomplishments of fashion designer Rachel Roy who- in just 5 years- has become a definitive figure in the critical, competitive fashion world.  Enamored with vintage film belles as a youth, she carried her passion into several divisions of Rocawear as an intern, and soon became creative director of its women’s and children’s divisions.  Her decision to launch her own line in 2005, however, was when she struck goldmine.

Ever since, fashion’s “it” girl has seen her vintage-inspired garments adorned on the likes of Oprah, Gwyneth Paltrow, Michelle Obama, Tyra Banks, Jennifer Gardner, and Ivanka Trump and can be seen in every major fashion magazine over the globe.  Her greatness, however, is not only found in her fashion career but in her valiant efforts to change the world through humanitarian work (this year she’s partnered with Fairwinds Trading Co. to actively create craft-based jobs for women in Rwanda and Tanzania).  I had the honor to sit down with the remarkably humble and stunning Rachel Roy before her RRNY Spring 2010 runway show in Atlanta to discuss her journey and wonderful ways that she is inspiring the world.

ML.com: You went from: impulsively wanting to dress your mom, dad, and brother in your youth (she giggles) to…[Michelle] Obama.

Oh my goodness!  And just last night again, I found out that she wore a piece from my pre-Fall collection for a speech in Mexico.

ML.com: Wow.

Yeah, it’s probably the best feeling that I could have in the business of dressing women

“…because if you’re not making people feel good about themselves, you’re not doing your job.”

So when someone that I’m inspired by wears it- especially in this point in her career where what she is wearing is so scrutinized that she can’t just throw something on, that means I am starting to do my job in a sense of making women feel good and strong and confident. And I was absolutely over the moon (giggles).

-

ML.com: It’s evident that your clothes have elements of vintage Hollywood.  Why does that era inspire you?

Growing up I couldn’t watch TV, but my family had all the channels that you get when you don’t pay for cable (laughs).  So one of those was Turner Classic, and Continue reading

Excursions: The Blue Ridge Mountains

(All photos taken by Travis Levius)

I have to admit up front: when my event planner friend invited me to her Super Bowl party at Blue Ridge, GA, I really could’ve cared less about the football game.  I was excited to get my camera out in the wilderness and hopefully capture magic.  It ended up becoming arguably my best work yet for a one-day excursion.  Take a look at the pics below:

Photo of the Day: Valentine’s Special 2010

This photo actually was not staged at all; in fact I don’t know the inviduals behind the screen, and they don’t know me.  I was covering a fashion show for the Art Institute of Atlanta and the set crew were preparing (or in the case of these three, “lounging”) before the show started.  A snap shot of three random acts became a complicated love story captured through my lens.

And who said Love wasn’t organic and spontaneous?  I guess like a lot of things in life…things just seem to come together when you let go.
